| Research Description: |
The Drug Discovery Program at the Scripps Research Institute in Jupiter, Florida has postdoctoral positions available for highly motivated Ph.D. graduate students with extensive organic synthesis expertise. These full-time lab positions are available starting between November 2011 and early 2012.
About us:
The medicinal chemistry group is led by Professor William R. Roush. Our ongoing research programs are headed by three experienced medicinal chemists: Associate Directors Ted Kamenecka, Yangbo Feng, and Thomas Bannister. Their research is focused on various drug discovery projects, including the discovery and optimization of kinase inhibitors, GPCR ligands, and modulators of nuclear hormone receptor activity. In addition, many members of the group participate in the discovery of new chemical probes as part of the NIH’s molecular libraries program. Scripps Florida has in-house assay development, DMPK, and pharmacology to support the drug discovery efforts. We have a state-of-the-art high throughput screening facility to identify leads in important new therapeutic areas.
Our laboratories are housed in three state-of-the art spacious new buildings erected on our permanent campus adjacent to the Florida Atlantic University honors campus in Jupiter, in Northern Palm Beach County, 10 miles north of West Palm Beach, 90 miles north of Miami, 160 miles south of Orlando, and less than 5 miles from spectacular Atlantic coast beaches.
The objective of the Drug Discovery Program at Scripps Florida is to discover, develop, and experimentally validate the usefulness of drug candidates and identify corporate partners to develop lead compounds. We continually seek funding through collaborations and research grants. Scripps Florida is a non-profit institution and is the second campus of the Scripps Research Institute headquartered in La Jolla, California. State, county, and local officials view Scripps as a vehicle to create a significant and lasting biotech/pharmaceutical presence in South Florida. More information about Scripps Florida can be found at our website: http://www.scripps.edu/florida/ In addition to the Drug Discovery Program within the Translational Research Institute, Scripps Florida has strong academic research programs in the Departments of Infectology, Cancer Biology, Metabolism and Aging, Neuroscience, Molecular Therapeutics, and Chemistry, The Institute particularly stresses interdisciplinary collaborative research. Scripps Florida has a graduate program (Ph.D.), part of The Scripps Research Institute’s Kellogg School of Science and Technology. |
| Position Requirements: |
Extensive Ph.D. graduate work in multi-step organic synthesis is required, with good laboratory skills and familiarity with modern synthetic techniques and instrumentation (HPLC-MS, HPLC, NMR, chromatography). Strong candidates may also have knowledge and experience in heterocyclic and medicinal chemistry and/or structure-based drug design. Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills necessary to thrive in a fast-paced team-oriented environment are also required.
